Talking about farming is sure to bring up the topic of weather. We are at the mercy of whatever Mother Nature throws at us. She gave us a beautiful week with lots of rain and sun, and we have a bountiful first box to show from it.

You can expect to find this week: Strawberries, Rhubarb, Broccoli, Lettuce Mix, Kale, Spinach, Turnip greens, and English walnuts.

Did you know…. Turnip greens are one of the healthiest vegetables.  They are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and manganese and a great antioxidant.

Since turnip greens have an abundance of nutrition, it would be wise to learn how to prepare them. Turnip greens when cooked can be delicious; they have a flavor that blends well with other ingredients. For maximum nutrition – (quick) steaming is the preferred method.

Turnip greens can be tossed with an olive oil based dressing and seasoned with a variety of spices. In addition, try the greens in miso soup, stir fried rice, beans, sweet potatoes or along side most grains. Sesame seeds, garlic, lemon and ginger root work magic when added to these dishes.

The english walnuts were harvested in fall of 2011 and dried and shelled by yours truly over the winter.

We hope you enjoy!
