Alas, the final Month of the CSA season is here.  However, we like to go out in a festive spirit so we’ll have the pavilion all decorated up for Autumn and all members will have pumpkins, gourds, and cornstalks as a part of the CSA shares as well this week!

New for this year, we’ll also have mums for sale!  These were raised by our friends at Misty Valley Farm, who also raise the hens laying the colorful eggs we have available each week.

In vegetable terms, the shares still quite packed!  This week we even have a few more new items to try in Fennel and Daikon Radishes.

With the Fennel, the main attraction is the bulb itself. It’s very firm and crunchy, and it tastes a bit like licorice and anise.  It can be eaten raw, sautéed, roasted, or even added to soups and sauces. The fronds can be used in salads.  Their is a great article on using Fennel in the kitchen found here    https://www.loveandlemons.com/what-is-fennel/

One other new vegetable we have for you this week is the daikon radish.  A bit unlike the radishes that are sometimes pretty potent and peppery, the daikon radish is more sweet, crisp, and mild.  Daikon radishes make a nice crunchy contribution to a salad or sandwich and are also great in a stir fry.

The final new item for this week will be Golden Beets.  Golden beets are bit sweeter and taste a little less earthy and more mellow in intensity than Red beets.   Substitute these in for Red Beets in any dish and see which you prefer!

The CSA share will look like:

Lettuce/Mesclun Mix

Fennel

Russet Potatoes

Onions

Pumpkins / Gourds (both non-edible, we’ll have pie pumpkins next week!)

Golden Beets

Daikon Radish

Choice Table

The news doesn’t stop with the CSA share this week.  On Saturday October 9th at 11:00AM we’ll have another Yoga at the Farm event!  We will be led once again by Kim Heffelfinger of the Yoga Loft of Bethlehem for a 45-minute yoga class.  You can sign up here:

Fall Yoga on the Farm

And it’s also time to give thought to stocking up for the winter!  We have a great supply of most things, but if you want to get in a larger order of meat from Gerhard Farms let me know this week or next!  I can place that order for you and have it ready for you to pick up here with your CSA share.  Thank you!!
