We are in the thick of Summer now and the abundance of rain paired with plenty of heat has everything (including the weeds)growing fast.  Some things have started showing signs of plant disease settling in though.   The cucumbers and zucchini right now are very numerous but both are probably past peak production.  Now is the time to stock up for winter on them!  We will have a bunch in the CSA shares and opportunity to buy more if needed.  We love to make zucchini bread, freeze one loaf and eat the other.  Zucchini bread in February is a nice treat!  And we have everything you need for homemade pickled cucumbers… garlic, dill, onions, hot peppers!

The CSA shares this week will feature a few new items some I just mentioned:

Garlic – not quite fully cured yet for long storage but who’s really going to store it long?!?

Hot Peppers – Jalapeno, Banana, Poblano  all mild to medium heat range

Green Beans – a plethora of picking to do out there!

We’ll also have once again:

Sweet Corn – also freezes well off the cob for winter use

Cherry Tomatoes/Tomatoes – we might have enough slicers for everyone as well!

Zucchini – 4 types to choose from

Cucumbers

Bell Peppers

Carrots

New Potatoes

Eggplant

I checked on a few other crops that are eagerly anticipated….  melons are looking quite nice but still a week maybe two away and the tomatillos and onions will be in the share next week so get your fresh salsa recipes ready!

Also new for our CSA members is another partner farm!  Emanuel Farm in Whitehall is going to supply us with organically grown blueberries available for purchase during your pickup days.  We met the Emanuel family while hosting the Lehigh County 4H Farm to Table Club for a farm tour.  They started a blueberry patch as a 4H project for their daughter and it is really productive and we’re happy to give our CSA members a chance to pick some up while they are here!
