The blazing hot sun the past week was good for some and bad for others.  The strawberries of course loved it and they ripened up in abundance!  The spinach, arugula, and even the broccoli was not so thrilled.  We will have a shortened spinach & arugula season and the broccoli heads will be on the smaller side this year it looks like.  We will keep a close eye on them this week and let them size up as much as possible before we harvest them for next weeks share.  All three of these veggies will be back in the share come October though!

The share for the 2nd week of CSA will look like this

Strawberries

Green Onions

Radish

Turnips

Kohlrabi

Spinach

Arugula

Dandelion

Pea Shoots

Lettuce Mix

The bags of greens might be on the lighter side but would combine to make a nice mix.  But we will let that up to you to customize the way you like! Here are a couple of pictures of what we did with our arugula and dandelion this week:

Arugula, Strawberries, Walnuts, Feta & a little balsamic

Dandelion, Nesting Box Eggs, Bacon, Potatoes, Green Onions, Mustard Vinaigrette

Tonight we are having roasted harukei turnips with pears in a rosemary amaretto glaze, one of our broilers on the grill, and a fresh green salad.  Can’t wait!

A couple of the new items this week, kohlrabi and pea shoots, might throw you off a little… We do have a nice write up of most of what we offer on our website.  Here is a link to the kohlrabi:

Pea shoots were something we tried last year after deer ravaged our main crop of peas.  They are just very young peas that go well in salads amongst many other more creative ideas you can try. Check out this link!

We have kept the deer at bay for the most part this year, but just last night they found our first planting of romaine and had their way with it.  We have many successions in progress planned throughout the year though so we’ll keep trying to get some to harvest.  We have most things that deer enjoy behind electric fence but I thought I could hide a row of lettuce in between some crops that deer do not eat.  They got me though, *^$%#&@!

The inch of rain was sorely needed and we are very thankful for it.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend!  See you soon,

Greg
