This is the final week for the 2015 CSA season, the inaugural year at our new farm.  The challenges of scaling up from 1 acre to 4 were daunting at times, but we learned and grew a lot!  We had some bountiful crops, zucchini and watermelon come right to mind, and we had some bummer crops like our fall lettuce and cauliflower.  There is always something that just goes wrong over the course of any season no matter how many acres are involved.   Maybe this keeps us determined and hungry to get back at it next year?!?

Over the weekend we did some harvesting of a different type.  We extracted the honey from the hives and bottled it up.  There was a pretty solid harvest of honey this year and everyone will be getting a small jar in this weeks CSA!  We will also have 1/2, 1, and 2 pound jars for sale at the CSA pick up pavilion.

Member suggested recipe for your kohlrabi:

KHOLRABI PICKLES

1 small kholbabi, peeled and cut 1/8″ by 1″

1 Tbsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar

enough water to dissolve salt/ sugar and cover veg.

Place all in a tightly covered container and shake to mix well.

Let stand in fridge for 2 or 3 days to blend flavors, shaking occasionally.

Serve with sandwiches or any way you enjoy cucumber pickles.

Thank you to all our members for giving us the opportunity to grow food for your families and supporting our local farm.  Also, thank you to all of our farm hands this year.  We had a great crew of all part timers helping out when their schedules allowed.   Hope to see everyone back next year!
