Ok, we are good on rain for a little bit after last week! The flower and herbs seem to have been affected the most, leaving us with lots of deadheading to do this week to try and get everything spruced back up. I think the vegetables will be ok though. We harvested all the winter squash out of the field on Tuesday just before the storm so they are in the greenhouse curing. We’ll include the kabocha squash in the CSA share this coming week. It has a fluffy texture similar to chestnut and a sweet flavor that tastes like sweet potato mixed with pumpkin. It is originally from Japan, and some consider it to be a Japanese pumpkin. Just like a regular pumpkin, kabocha squash is extremely versatile in its uses in the kitchen! https://www.purewow.com/food/kabocha-squash-recipes
We’re also going to start the Russet Potato harvest this week. These potatoes are great winter keepers and we hope we have a great harvest of them to give members a nice supply going into winter. We dug just a few and it looked promising! To pair up with these potatoes, I thought we’d harvest the leeks this week as well. It might be all the rain and clouds or maybe just the cooler weather that has me thinking soup right now.
The CSA share for this week:
Russet Potatoes
Leeks
Kabocha Squash
Delicata Squash
Kale
Sweet/Hot Pepper station
Beans
Seedless Watermelon – these will be on the smaller side this week and the last of melon’s for 2021. But any melon is better then no melon!
